The best cities for digital nomads in 2026, by budget

There's no single best city for digital nomads. The right one depends on your budget, your time zone, how social you want to be and whether you'd rather surf, hike or sit in cafes.

So rather than a top ten, here are the cities nomads keep coming back to, grouped by what a comfortable month actually costs. Every number comes from our cost pages, where each price links to its source.

Under about $1,500 a month

The best value is in Southeast Asia, with Buenos Aires the stand-out in Latin America.

Chiang Mai has been a nomad favourite for over a decade: cheap, calm, full of cafes and coworking, with a big community year round. Da Nang offers beaches and a modern city at some of the lowest prices we found. Bangkok suits people who want a big city with everything open late. Buenos Aires has European-style neighbourhoods, a huge food scene and good value, though prices move fast with inflation.

About $1,500 to $2,500 a month

The middle band is where most of the famous nomad hubs sit.

Canggu in Bali is built around surfing, coworking and cafes, and is one of the most social places to work remotely. Medellín has spring weather all year and a big remote-worker community. Mexico City is a world-class food city that works well for North American time zones. Tbilisi is a favourite for its long visa-free stays for many nationalities, wine and low costs by European standards.

About $2,500 a month and up

Western Europe and the big Asian capitals cost more, mostly because of rent, but offer infrastructure, culture and easy travel.

Lisbon is still the nomad capital of Europe, with an enormous community, though rent has risen sharply. Porto and Valencia offer a similar lifestyle for less. Budapest and Prague are good value for central Europe. Tokyo costs less than many people expect once you're set up in a monthly apartment.

How to choose

Budget first

Rent decides most of the total. If a city's one-bedroom costs more than you want to spend on your whole month somewhere else, that tells you most of what you need to know.

Time zone second

If you work with a team or clients, being three hours off is very different from being nine. Latin America suits North American hours, Europe and Africa suit European ones, and Southeast Asia works for Asia and Australia.

Then community

Your first month somewhere new is much better if you know someone. Cities with big nomad communities make it easy to meet people at coworking spaces and events. Even better is arriving where a friend, or a friend of a friend, already lives.

Orbit shows you which friends, and friends of friends, live in or are heading to the same city as you, and the friend you share makes the introduction.
